Quinta do Convento da Franqueira, an enchanting guest house offering bed and breakfast and self catering accommodation. This 16th century Franciscan monastery surrounded by 35 acres of beautiful private grounds has been carefully restored with charm and imagination by the Gallie family, owners since 1965, creating a comfortable environment in which guests feel completely at home. The lush greenery of Franqueira's gardens, fields and woodlands, and the spring-fed swimming pool, hidden behind a graceful 17th Century 'fonte', provide the visitor with a perfect setting in which to unwind. Located outside the market town of Barcelos in Portugal, the Quinta do Convento da Franqueira combines high standards of comfort with historical interest, offering excellent accommodation in the lovely setting of the Minho. In the main house, the four guest bedrooms are attractively furnished with antiques, original paintings and traditional Portuguese textiles. Each room has an ensuite bath or shower room, a tray with tea making facilities, and a view of the garden. The Blue Room has a hand painted four-poster bed, antique English furniture and a bathroom also tiled with "Viuva Lamego" tiles. The Pink Room has twin beds, antique and reproduction furniture, the original granite window seats and a colourful yellow tiled bathroom. The Yellow Room is decorated with English regency furniture and a locally made "Lit Bateau". The shower room is decorated with hand painted wall tiles. The Beige Room (which is actually blue) has twin beds and is furnished with English antiques and has its own small sitting room. The spacious bathroom has blue and white "Viuva Lamego" wall tiles. The elegant Gallery Drawing Room leads to the grand staircase and the choir stalls of the church. The table where guests take their breakfast is at the end of the room. During cooler months a log fire is lit, giving a very cozy atmosphere. There are also shelves stocked with books, mainly in English for guests to browse through, and a wealth of guides, maps and large books on just about everything of interest to see locally or further afield. A small fridge is kept stocked with soft drinks, beer and local Vinho Verde. Free WiFi is available in this room. There is also a small sitting room with TV and DVD/Video player, card table and a rocking horse for younger guests. The Cloister Flat, is a one bedroom apartment located on the ground floor of the main house. The flat has easy access to the cloisters and patio area where there is a table and barbecue for al fresco meals. The living area has a sofa bed, 2 armchairs, chest of drawers and granite window seats. The traditional furniture is locally made, some hand painted. The kitchen area is hidden from the living room by curtains and contains a sink, refrigerator, a two-ring hob, microwave, and table for four. The small bedroom with a double bed, chest of drawers and wardrobe looks onto the cloisters. The bathroom is decorated with blue and white Portuguese wall tiles. Sleeps 2 +1. Free WiFi. The Gatehouse. For guests who prefer an extra degree of privacy, the Gatehouse is above the main gate to the patio and cloister gardens and has an independent entrance. Brian Gallie, with his naval background, designed the Gatehouse along nautical lines. "Above deck" the living space is divided into a small double bedroom and a living room with a sofa that can be used as a single bed, plus a table and chairs. Sleeps 2. The two terraces fore and aft, afford a 360-degree view of the Quinta and have tables, chairs and a barbecue. The galley kitchen, with a sink, gas cooker and fridge, and the shower room are "below deck" on the ground floor. A sliding hatch protects the external steps from an unexpected shower! Casa dos Assentos is the main house of an ancient farm, separated now from agricultural activities, the property still covers an area of 2ha, totally converted into gardens and integrated in the "Turismo no Espaço Rural" (Rural Tourism Scheme) of the Alto Minho Region. Open to guests since 1984, within the concept of "Turismo de Habitação" at the main house only, in 1994 the remaining buildings and grounds were converted to tourism, offering two cottages one for four guests and another for six guests. The garden is very pleasant having two swimming polls with constant water renovation and a tennis court . Casa dos Assentos is in a very pleasant and central location making easy to explore all Portugal north region with short drives.
